SOROCABA SANCTUARY

Carol was one the first adult chimpanzees who arrived at the sanctuary. She came from a former breeder located in Paraná state – where the owners used to reproduce chimpanzees to supply circuses, zoos and private owners. Carol was born in a circus that performed in the northeast of Brazil and was bought by the breeder, to be used to reproduce.

Carol never got pregnant and no one knows exactly why. She got together with several partners who had babies with other females who lived in the breeder. When she arrived at our sanctuary, nine years ago, she came together with Gilberto, Margareth, Ditty, Lulu and Tuca. Gilberto, the alpha male, was the main reproducer of the breeders and never got interest to Carol or Tuca. He used to concentrate his wish for reproduction Lulu, Ditty and Margareth. Carol and Tuca suffered when they observed Gilberto copulating with her friends and did not look for them.

We separated both of them, so they could have a company that could give them more attention, but Carol was not lucky with males. She spent a few months with Luke, who suffer from the boot syndrome (as well as Jimmy, from Zoonit) and is only interested in men and women wearing boots. Carol was only his friend, nothing more.

There were other quick attempts with males that were not successful, until Alex arrived. The relationship between them is of love, but with no sex. Alex suffers from another syndrome: he masturbates when women, especially blond one, get near him. Because of that, Carol hates all women and has even tried to catch a few of them who got near Alex, in revenge.

It is beautiful to see the way Alex and Carol love each other. The kisses they give each other frequently can be compared to the ones in Brazilian soap operas. They kiss and hug for several minutes.

In order to compensate the lack of a male who would copulate with her and give her a baby, maybe Carol found a refugee in the magazines, as a way to occupy her time and forget about the pain of this frustration. However, she is aware that in comparison with other females who were not lucky enough to have a pleasant company she is lucky to have Alex – a man who is head over heels about her even suffering from a lot of psychological traumas of the time he was used in a circus – who considers her the reason of his life.
